Courses - Plymouth Options

Plymouth Options offer psycho-educational courses based on the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy model.

Plymouth Options offers a range of four to six week courses that run weekly, with each session lasting two hours. These courses offer techniques and coping strategies to help manage low mood and anxiety, provide tools to help you manage the physical symptoms,  challenge negative thoughts and change unhelpful behaviours. Each course also covers sleep and diet, which can have a big impact on mood.

Anxiety Management

This course is appropriate for those experiencing panic, agoraphobia, social anxiety, worries, OCD and health anxiety. It introduces the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) model and offers an understanding of what anxiety is, what causes it and how to manage it.

The course offers techniques on managing physical symptoms through breathing/relaxation techniques, challenging negative thoughts, managing worries, identifying safety behaviours and avoidance, and communication styles, as well as providing tips on improving sleep and diet.
 

Depression Management

This course focuses on managing symptoms of low mood, depression, low motivation and low energy, as well as negative or self-critical thoughts.

The course offers techniques on managing physical symptoms with breathing/relaxation techniques, challenging negative thoughts, managing worries, identifying unhelpful behaviours and avoidance, communication styles, as well as providing tips for improved sleep and diet.


Managing Grief

This course is appropriate for those who have been bereaved, describes the stages of grief and explores the feelings of shock, denial, guilt, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance that are commonly experienced. The course offers an understanding of the challenges of dealing with bereavement, and provides skills to help participants move forward.


Managing Irritation and Frustration

This course is based on the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) model that offers techniques on managing symptoms of frustration, short temper or irritation that can affect our mood. It introduces the CBT model and offers an understanding of frustration triggers as well as tools to manage those symptoms, including relaxation techniques, communication styles and assertiveness.


Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a skill you can develop and a form of self-awareness training that helps you get to know yourself more fully, think more clearly and in the present moment. Being mindful gives you the opportunity to respond to difficult events and situations in new ways, rather than just following old patterns.

This six week course focuses on breathing and relaxation, as well as introducing Mindfulness techniques to help you focus on the present moment rather than dwelling on past or future worries.


Stress Control

This course introduces Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and helps you to understand helps you understand what stress is, identify what causes your stress and how it is affecting you, and gives you some self-help strategies to tackle stress. It offers CBT techniques on managing physical symptoms with breathing/relaxation techniques, challenging negative thoughts, managing worries and identifying unhelpful behaviours, as well as providing tips for better sleep and diet.
