#NAW2019 – Afra’s experience

by | 6th March 2019 | News

Now in its 12th year, National Apprenticeship Week is a celebration of the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy. This week, 4th – 8th March, Livewell Southwest is highlighting the fantastic opportunities available for those interested in an apprenticeship, as well as looking at the experiences of some our apprentices.

We started the week looking at the different career paths available to Livewell Southwest apprentices, as well as taking a look back at the experiences of past apprentices Lauren Bancroft and Bronwyn Shaw, who both secured permanent positions with Livewell Southwest on completion of their apprenticeships. Yesterday saw us speak to current apprentice, Sonia Prater, about her experience so far. Today it’s the turn of Afra Forder, currently undertaking a Level 3 Health & Social Care apprenticeship with the Ivybridge/Yealm Community Therapy Team.

Afra says, “In my role, I work Monday through to Thursday supporting the physiotherapists and occupational therapists in the community. This could range from helping to deliver and fit specialist equipment, to completing mobility practice or home exercise programmes, and I love seeing the progress being made by the people using our service. Fridays are my study day, when I can complete work set by my assessor.

“I decided to undertake an apprenticeship because I wanted to get real working experience whilst learning the theory behind the practice and gaining a qualification.

“I’ve found this to be the best thing about doing an apprenticeship; working alongside completing the qualification can often help when it comes to completing the theory work because I can put everything I have learnt into practice.

“Apprenticeships are a great alternative if you have had enough of classrooms and full-time study. They help you to gain confidence and experience in your chosen job.”

If you’d like more information on the different types of apprenticeships available, you can download a useful guide to apprenticeships from gov.uk here.
