Weight Management Service

The Weight Management Service in Plymouth is a specialist service for people who are very overweight and would like support to lose weight. To access the program you must be a Plymouth resident with a BMI of over 40, or over 35 with other medical problems.

What happens when I am referred?

You will be contacted by letter and offered an appointment to attend an Induction Session which is run by a Specialist Weight Management Nurse. This session will give you detailed information on what you can expect from the service.

What type of treatments are offered?

The specialist team, which includes nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists, clinical psychologist and consultant, will support you with lifestyle changes during a two year, mainly group-based program. This includes physical activity, food portions, label reading and looking at other reasons why people over-eat or are less active. We will also prepare and refer on for bariatric surgery (gastric band and gastric bypass) for those who are interested.

  • Non-mobile patients
  • Patients who are unwilling or unable to participate in group program (please assess suitability of Mental Health and Learning Disability patients and contact a member of the Weight Management nursing team if required)

  • BMI (Body Mass Index)
  • BP (Blood Pressure)
  • HbA1C (glucose levels)
  • U & E (urea & electrolytes)
  • FBC (full blood count)
  • TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone)
  • LFT (liver function test)
  • Cholesterol
