The Consultant is based on the hospital site and has full responsibility for the medical care of the inpatients. He is supported by a Speciality Doctor based on the unit. Out of hours service is provided as part of the Mount Gould Hospital on-call service. The consultant-led outpatient clinic on site provides the opportunity for follow-up after discharge. X-ray facilities are on site, laboratory support and other investigations are provided from Derriford hospital.
Nurses provide cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They contribute towards the MDT by participating in assessing, planning and evaluating patients and developing goals depending upon the patient needs. They offer a comprehensive and holistic apporoach to patient care.
Physiotherapists assess physical ability related to function. This may include problems with movement, balance, co-ordination, sensation, walking and upper limb function. Individual treatment plans will be devised to help maintain or improve function. They will also jointly assess for wheelchairs with occupational therapists.
Occuaptional therapists assess the physical, cognitive and social functions and involve the individual in a structured programme of activities to achieve maximum independence and quality of life.
The Clinical Neuropsychologists specialise in the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes associated with neurological damage of brain injury. We work with patients, families and carers to understand the nature of these changes and design or advise on specific treatments. We also offer help with anxiety, depression and other emotional problems, e.g. anger management or personality change associated with neurological illness/brain injury.
Speech and language therapy aims to maximise overall communication for each client using individual and group therapy. We also ensure clients are able to eat and drink safely.
